AGOSTINI, Nicolò degli. Li successi bellici seguiti nella Italia . Niccolò Zopino and Vincenzo de Polo, 1 August 1521. 4°. Title printed in red and black, large title woodcut of equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius signed IBP in reverse and 7 full-page woodcuts from 5 blocks, 4 signed Z.A. and one signed I.B., roman type, double column. (Washed, light stain in one leaf, occasional slight worming expertly repaired with loss of a few letters, two extreme margins restored.) Modern red morocco, gilt spine, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges, by Leighton. Provenance : Rupert Ridolfi (bookplate); Girolamo d'Adda; Charles Fairfax Murray (booklabel, Catalogo dei libri posseduti da Charles Fairfax Murray provenienti dalla Biblioteca del Marchese Girolamo d'Adda , pt. III, 1902, no. 35). RARE epic poem of famous Italian battles fought at Ghiara d'Adda, Padua, Brescia, Ravenna and Vicenza from 1509 to 1521. The woodcuts are signed ZA and IBP/IB. At least some of the work formerly attributed to Zoan Andrea has been reassigned to Giovanni Antonio (cf. Mantegna , Royal Academy Exhibition, 1992, no.47); Mortimer rejects Essling's identification of IBP with Giovanni Battista Porta (cf. Mortimer, Harvard Italian 411). Three of the woodcuts had been used earlier in 1521 by the same printers for an edition of Boiardo's Orlando inamorato (reproduced in Essling, vol. II, pt. I, pp. 132-3). Only 3 other copies are recorded in Essling. Brunet I, 110-111; Essling 2101; Sander 131; Censimento A449.
