Agricola Giorgio Opera di Giorgio Agricola de l'arte de metalli partita in XII libri. (Al colophon): In Basilea: per Hieronimo Frobenio et Nicolao Episcopio, 1563). In-folio (312x213). “Agricola’s De re metallica is one of the great monuments of technology by reason of the comprehensiveness of its text and the detail and intelligibility of his numerous illustrations. For two centuries De re metallica remained the chief texbook on mining and metallurgy” (Singer, History of technology, III, 2728). “The magnificent woodcut illustrations are a feature of this great work which remained unexcelled for generations. It marks the beginning of scientific method through observations as distinct from the purely scholastic approach of the Middle Ages” (Annan, Historic books on mining, 6). “Agricola was the first author to compile a book in which technical descriptions and drawings were of sufficent accuracy and detail to enable machines to be made from the information supplied. Workshops, tools, machines and things relating to metals are excellently described and illustrated. He described multistage reciprocating minepumps which were driven by waterwheels; and horsedriven pumps, with rackgears and chains, arranged in series to drain mines with over 200 feet total lift. His use of antifriction rollers for bearing is interesting” (Davison, Historic books on machines, 7); Dibner, Heralds of science, 88 (ed.orig.); PMM, 79 (id.); Norman library of science and medicine, 20 (id.); Ferguson, Bibliotheca chemica, I, 9; Zittel, History of geology and paleontology, 50; Darmstaedter, Georg Agricola, 8990.
