AIKIN, John (1747-1822). The History of the Environs of London ... within twenty-five miles of the Metropolis , London: John Stockdale, 1811. 4° (293 x 225mm.), 7 engraved maps, 6 folding, and 15 engraved plates after E. Dayes (one or two short tears to maps, occasional light spotting), later half cloth (lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION. John Aikin, physician and author, moved from Yarmouth in 1792, which was hostile to the dissenter movement of which he was a supporter, to London, and became better known for his literary efforts than his medical practice. He was friends with Southey, Priestley, Pennant and John Howard who employed Aikin to write reports on prisons and other subjects. His best known works include England Delineated, or a geographical description... (London, 1790), A Description of the Country from Thirty to Forty Miles round Manchester (London, 1795), and The Woodland Companion, or a brief description of British Trees (London, 1802).
