Amsterdam: by Giles Thorp, 1612. Small 4° (202 x 154mm). Collation: * 2 A-Z 4 Aa-Vv 4 Xx 2 . Woodcut musical notation. (Tear in Qq1 repaired affecting some letters on ten lines; some other neat marginal repairs.) 19th-century brown morocco gilt, spine gilt in compartments, by Lortic Frères, edges gilt. Provenance : Mount Stuart bookplate. FIRST EDITION of Ainsworth's translation of the Psalms. He was leader of the separatist congregation at Amsterdam and attached to the group of Independents, known as 'Brownists'. This version is particularly important, as it was the one taken by the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620 for use in America. STC 2407; Herbert 317. A FINE COPY.
