The author, state senator from West Virginia, was one of a hunting expedition of three men who went to Alaska in 1919, and the trip was so arduous--especially the trip down the White River--that one of the men, Dr. Evans, died soon after their return. The guide, Eugene Jacquot, later guided General R.E. Woods, Wild Bill Donovan, Nelson Rockefeller and other prominent figures safely through the wilderness. Laid in is a copy of a typed letter from the author, detailing why there was a lengthy delay in the reissue of the volume, which was originally published in 1928.
