Title: Album with 24 large photographs chronicling construction of the Panama Canal Author: Place: [Panama] Publisher: Date: 1907-1914 Description: Gelatin silver photographs, captioned in the negative. 20.3x25.3 cm (8x10"), glued to leaves of an album measuring 25.5x33 cm (10x13"), plain wrappers, broad bound. Evocative series of views, apparently copy photographs made from images take by someone involved in the construction and printed out shortly after completion of the canal. The first image is of "Interior of Bachelor Quarters, Culebra," dated 1907; then a street scene at Coco Grove; construction of the Gatun Locks as of Feb. 1, 1910; the I.C.C. Club House at Gatun, 1910; Porto Bello, 1910 and 1911; the Culebra Cut in 1912; the Washington Hotel in Colon; the Gatun spillway; the Balboa terminals; the Gatun Locks in operation, with four "C-class" submarines trying them out, 1914; and more views. A fascinating compilation. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear to the plain wrappers; some images with marginal chips and edge loss, occasional silvering in the emulsion; generally very good.
