Approximately 165 original silver photographs, most snapshots about 9x9 cm (3½x3½”) or a bit a larger; 4 are 8x10” (3 of these not mounted); 14 are of miniature size. Corner mounted on black album leaves, some with handwritten captions or section headings. Album measures 28x35 cm (11x13¾”), boards. Marvelous original photograph album of a Boy Scout troop in Cuba at the end of the 1950s. The first leaf has a color photolithograph of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the world scout movement, and on the back is the title “’Scouts de Cuba’: Manada del Grupo 14, Habana.” Following are original candid photographs of young scouts in groups doing scouting activities, including tying knots, raising flags, pitching tents, marching and hiking (with one group wearing white masks, captioned “el carnival”), and more. Of particular and curious interest are several shots of scouts with rifles, one of whom is wearing a Fidel Castro-style cap, with a pasted-on black beard. The caption on the leaf with the “Castro” pictures reads “Rally de lobatos ‘Año de la Libertad’”. There are a number of women in the photographs, evidently the scout mothers, and one young woman in particular stands out – she was the Scout Leader. It was very unusual in that era for the Leaders to be women. The album was assembled and owned by the Scout Leader, and towards the end of the album are more photographs of her, and her family. Clipped cartoon images of scouts are interspersed with the photographs. The Boy Scout movement faded in Cuba following the 1959 revolution and was replaced with the Communist-inspired José Marti Pioneer Organization, named after the Cuban nationalist and poet. Accompanying the album are two Boy Scout cloth patches. One of the patches bears the initials "ASC", standing for Associacion de Boy Scouts de Cuba, and is a rare patch unique to Cuba.
