Alfred George Wenham - Royal Navy - an interesting WWII Second World War D-Day related collection of items from the late Alfred George Wenham of the British Royal Navy, comprising his original WWII period Sailor's hat, an original WWII period White Ensign flag (labelled 'White Ensign 4BDS '), as well as Wenham's ration book and Clothing Ration Book from just after the war. The flag measures approx; 87x181cm. Interesting collection. In WW2 Alfred served in Sicily, Italy and was then assigned to duties on D-Day. On 6th June 1944 (D-Day), Wenham's landing craft was in the first wave to hit Omaha beach transporting American 29th Infantry soldiers on to the beach in Normandy. It is not widely known, but there was a substantial Royal Navy presence on Omaha on D-Day. On Omaha Beach, four battalions of American troops were landed from seven British transport ships and LCA Flotillas. Both of the 2nd and 5th the US Ranger Infantry Battalions were with the Royal Navy, as were the 1st Battalions of 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division and the 1st Battalion of 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division.
