ALL SAINTS. Historiated initial G on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT MISSAL ON VELLUM. [Veneto, c. 1450]. 1 leaf, 303 x 205 mm. (12 1/4 x 8 1/8 in.), written in brown and red ink in two sizes of a gothic rotunda script, justification (210 x 130 mm.), double columns of 30 lines, two-line red or blue Lombard initials; 7-line initial G in blue with white tracery on a burnished gold ground (50 x 50mm.), historiated with St. Peter, holding book and keys, and St. Paul, holding a sword, both half-length, leading a company of saints; leafy border in two shades of mauve, blue, green and burnished gold extending the height of the page with extensions into the upper and lower margins. Slight rubbing or flaking of gold; extensive offset of text from another leaf of the same manuscript, also across miniature; margins thumbed, extreme edges discolored, upper edges frayed; tipped to a velvet backing . The initial G introduces the Introit Gaudeamus omnes in domino for the feast of All Saints (November 1). This was originally the verso of the leaf; the recto contains most of the mass for the Vigil of All Saints, which finishes on the verso above the miniature.
