Embellished with One Hundred and Twenty Portraits, from the Indian Gallery in the Department of War, at Washington., by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall 1858. Philadelphia. D. Rice & A.N. Hart. In 3 volumes, all 4to in period embossed brown moroccan boards with gilt title on spine and gilt fore-edges, 333p, 39 hand colored plates and frontis (vol. I), 288pp, 47 plates and frontis (vol. II), and 392pp, 31 plates and frontis, (120 total hand colored plates). Arguably the most important series on early 19th century American Indians, these striking prints from McKenney & Hall's impressive portfolio of Indian document an important period of American history. Condition: Minor shelf wear to boards, inked owners names on front and rear paste-downs, plate on pg 366, Vol. II nearly loose with very slight margin damage, overall VG to VG+.
