Americas.- Gonzalez de Barcia (Andres) Historiadores Primitivos de las Indias Occidentales..., 3 vol., first collected edition, titles with woodcut device, woodcut head- & tail-pieces and initials, vol.3 with engraved head-piece, vol.1 with contemporary ink inscription to title crossed out and A1 slightly defective at lower outer corner (repaired), vol.2 with H2 defective at inner margin, [para 2]1 short tear to lower margin, [para 3 & 4] signatures bound in wrong order and [para 7 & 8] signatures damp-stained at head, vol.3 with Dd1 torn along edge of text and C1 of Canto III shaved with slight loss to side-notes, browning to a few leaves but generally a good clean copy, bookplate of Sir Richard Vyvyan Bart., contemporary limp vellum with loops and toggles (one broken), spines with red roan labels (slightly chipped at edges), rubbed and soiled, nick to head of spine of vol.3, [Sabin 3350], folio, Madrid, [?Ibarra], 1749. ⁂ Important collection of works on the early settlement of the Americas including accounts by Columbus, Cortes, Nunez Cabeca de Vaca, Lopez de Gomara, Zarate, Xerez, Schmidel and others. A pencil note on the front pastedown of vol.1 reads, "Containing the scarce Cartas of Cortes and Narration of Cabeca de Baca. This collection of voyages is very rare because of the accidental destruction by fire of a large number of copies. J.S. Cox."
