Date Published: 1811 Description: [4], xix, [1], 386, [2] + [4] ad pp. With folding engraved map & 14 engraved plates (1 of them hand-colored); title page vignette. (4to) 29x23 cm (11½x9"), finely bound by Philip Dusel in period-style full calf, spine & covers elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt edges & turn-ins, maroon endpapers, marbled edges. First Edition. Earliest first-hand account by a British citizen of the interior of the mysterious Kingdom of Nepal. At the request of the Nepalese, Kirkpatrick was sent by the British to mediate between the Chinese and the Nepalese when the former attacked across Tibet and lay at the outskirts of Kathmandu. Kirkpatrick, the British officers who accompanied him, and his fellow officials were the first British to set foot in the secluded valley of Nepal. The colored plate depicts a Khalidge, which is a type of pheasant. The other plates depict Nepalese people, implements, weapons, views, etc. The large folding map is "Map of Nepaul, with the Routes, &c., of Capt. Kirkpatrick." Condition: Some light foxing to and offsetting from the plates, the folding map with a 5" stub tear and a few short splits at fold intersections; very good or better in fine modern binding.
