AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER CIRCA 380-350 B.C. The obverse with a youthful Dionysos standing at the center, nude but for a mantle draped over his left forearm and held in his right hand, a phiale in his raised left hand, a fillet in his long curly locks, facing a seated maenad, with long flowing curls, wearing a pelt over a chiton, pulling her garment from the back in her left hand, a tympanum in her raised right hand, a fillet hanging above, to the left a satyr seated on an amphora, an oinochoe in his left hand, a kantharos in his raised right, facing a nude youth with short curly hair, leaning on a column with a mantle draped over it, a wreath above; the reverse with four draped youths, one with a staff, one with a strigil, two pairs of jumping weights and a cruciform element above; meander and saltire squares below the scenes, tongues above, flanked by a double row of dots, ivy and berries on the neck, the obverse with a band of laurel on the exterior of the rim, the reverse with a double row of dots, ivy and berries on the top of the rim, palmettes on the top and sides of the handle plates 19¼ in. (48.9 cm.) high
