AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA CIRCA 540-530 B.C. The obverse with an arming scene, a bearded warrior standing at the center, wearing a short chiton and greaves, fastening one to his raised left calf, a high-crested Corinthian helmet on the ground below, flanked by four attendants including two youths to the left, one draped holding a staff, one nude, a standing female figure and a youth to the right, the female clad in a chiton and holding the warrior's shield and spear, a nude youth behind holding a spear, a palmette-lotus chain on the neck; the reverse partially preserving a dancing maenad between two satyrs, draped figures flanking a sphinx on the neck; alternating red and black tongues on the shoulders, rays above the foot, palmette complexes below the handles, details in added red 8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm.) high
