ATTRIBUTED TO THE ORCHARD PAINTER, CIRCA 470-460 B.C.
AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER ATTRIBUTED TO THE ORCHARD PAINTER, CIRCA 470-460 B.C. The obverse with Dionysos between satyrs, the god moving right, his head turned back, wearing a chiton and himation, a thick wreath and ivy in his hair, holding a vine in his left hand and a rhyton in his right, the satyrs depicted nude, that to the right older and ithyphallic, that to the left younger, a wreath in added red on his bald pate, a young satyr to the left, his left leg raised, to the far left a youth wearing a chiton and himation and a wreath of ivy, his arms enveloped in the drapery; the reverse with two draped youths facing a bearded trainer, the youth to the left gesturing with his upraised right arm, the youth in the middle with his mantle pulled up over his head, the trainer holding a staff, all wearing wreaths in added red; the scenes with a ground line in added red and framed by double rows of ivy leaves on either side, tongues on the shoulders, a dotted lotus bud chain around the neck on the obverse, double rows of ivy leaves on the exterior of the rim, rays above the foot; a graffito on the underside of the foot 16 5/8 in. (42.2 cm.) high
