AN AUGSBURG EARLY GILT-METAL STRIKING TABLE CLOCK stamped H S the case with square-section columns engraved with formal leaf foliage, the four sides engraved with allegories of time, one engraved with Venus with Cupid's dart and an enflamed heart, the other with the laurel-bearing Apollo as the sun-god Helios 'Sol', the rear panel engraved with a strike indication ring and the God Mars beneath, the dial with 24 hour Roman and Arabic chapter ring engraved beneath with Cupid reposing on a skull beside Chronos's hour-glass, the movement entirely of steel with square section double-screwed pillars, the movement stamped HS within a shield, twin chain fusees for the countwheel-strike on bell and going train, the alarm with going barrel, the escapement now with verge and front-swinging pendulum, on later? ebonised wood base with front drawer and on bun feet 7¾in. (19.5cm.) high
