AN AUSTRIAN GILT-COPPER WRITING CASKET BY GEORG MARTIN GIZL, SALZBURG, CIRCA 1740-44 Of rectangular shape, engraved overall and mounted with foliate scrolls, the hinged lid engraved with a hunting scene above slender corner balusters contained within concave angles, the sides with carrying handles, the back engraved with fighting equestrian figures, the drop front with applied borders surmounted by a fruiting vase flanked by eagles above the arms of Leopold von Firmian, flanked by the Latin inscription ‘C ELSISSIMUS A C R EVERENDISSIMUS D OMINUS L EOPOLDUS , A RCHIEPISCOPUS E T S ACRI R OMANI I MPERI E XCELSUS P RINCEPS S ALISBURGENSIS S ACRAE S EDIS A POSTOLICAE L EGATUS N ATUS G ERMANIAE P RIMAS E X I LLUSTRISSIMA E T A NTIQUISSIMA P ROSAPIA L IBERORUM B ARONUM D E F IRMIAN ’ and signature ‘G EORG M ARTIN G IZL ’, and fitted with a concealed spring mechanism revealing an escutcheon, enclosing a removable tray engraved with an equestrian cartouche and two drawers, one fitted with an inkwell and a pounce-pot, the reverse of the lid with a pierced panel centered by an eye in a triangle within a sunburst, the detached internal cover also engraved with equestrian figures, the interior front engraved with female saint in oval panel above two drawers, the inside front engraved with the cypher ‘RIA’, minor losses to the gilt bronze elements, some elements possibly moved 10 ¾ in. (27 cm.) high, 16 in. (41 cm.) wide, 11 ¼ in. (29 cm.) deep
