An early Victorian oak and mahogany longcase clock, 36 cm circular painted dial inscribed J Smith, Derby, Roman numerals, twin winding holes, ... eight-day movement striking on a bell, the hood with swan neck pediment, shaped rectangular door to waist inlaid with an oval shell patera, flanked by reeded quarter-columns, plinth base, 204cm high, c.1840 John Smith (1813-1886) was born into a family with associations with the clock trade and was apprenticed and later employed by John Whitehurst III at Derby. he left and set up on his own account in Nuns' Street in 1847/48 where he made watches & robust domestic clocks, and where the present clock was almost certainly made. He moved to King Street in 1858 and to 27, Queen Street (where his firm remained until 1999) in 1865. John Smith & Sons (now Smith of Derby Ltd., Alfreton Road) have been renowned worldwide since as makers of fine turret clocks. .
