AN EGYPTIAN BASALT FIGURE OF A SEATED SCRIBE Middle Kingdom, Dynasty XII, 1991-1783 B.C. Seated cross-legged, wearing a wrap-around skirt pulled tightly across his thighs on which his hands rest, palms down, inscribed with three lines of damaged hieroglyphs with an invocation offering prayer to Ptah-Soker, on an integral plinth preserving a fragmentary inscription along the front, the head and upper shoulders modern 9½ in. (24.1 cm) high
