AN EGYPTIAN PAINTED WOOD STELE FOR TJEPEN LATE PERIOD, DYNASTY XXV-XXVI, 712-525 B.C. Painted in blue, green, red and white over gesso, the arching top with a winged solar disk under a blue border representing the sky, with cobras suspended from the disk, one wearing the Red crown and one the White crown, surrounded by hieroglyphs, reading: "The Behdetite" (twice); and "That he may give (or, as he gives?) all offerings (?)," the main panel below with the owner, the lady Tjepen, to the right, being led by ibis-headed Thoth towards Osiris and Isis, with a mummiform deity at the far left, hieroglyphic captions above, reading before Osiris: "Osiris...," before Thoth: "Lord of...," and before the deceased: "The Osiris Tjepen," with a column of text to the right, reading: "Recitation by Osiris, Lord of Rosetau, that he may [giv]e (or, as he [giv]es?) offerings Tjepen," the panel framed on three sides by a border of rectangles and topped by a kheker -frieze, with seven lines of hieroglyphic text below, reading: "[Re]citation by Osiris, Foremost of the West, Great God, Lord of Abydos; Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, who resides in Shetawet; Re-Harakhty, Great God, Lord of Heaven, Chief of Gods; Atum, Lord of the Two Lands, the Heliopolitan; Geb, Hereditary Prince of the Gods; Anubis, Lord of the Sacred (i.e., cemetery), Foremost of the God's Booth; Osiris, of Rosetau; Osiris, Lord of Busiris; Osiris Wennofer, Ruler of Eter[nity]; that they may give (or, as they give?) invocation-offerings (consisting of) bread and beer, 1000 of oxen and 1000 of fowl, 1000 of offerings, 1000 of sustenance, 1000 of incense, 1000 of alabaster vessels and clothing, 1000 of every good, pure thing, 1000 of every good, sweet thing on which [li]ves in the West, for the Osiris Tjepen, daughter of Neskhons, Justified; the [n]ame of [her] mother is Tje-iuiut.
