AN ELEGANT PAIR OF PINK DIAMOND AND DEMANTOID GARNET ROSE EAR CLIPS, CHRISTOPHER WALLING Each articulated flower designed as a pav-set pink diamond rosebud, with a circular-cut demantoid garnet calyx, on a circular-cut pink diamond stem, extending circular-cut demantoid garnet leaves and a pink diamond and demantoid garnet bud, mounted in 18K rose, green and yellow gold Signed by C. Walling Total weights of the pink diamonds and demantoid garnets approximately 8.00 and 6.50 cts. To a designer, the world is his oyster from which he plucks the choicest tidbits for inspiration. A flower, a butterfly or something as innocent as a smile can influence an artist. One day, while meditating in a temple, Christopher Walling noticed a spray of pink flowers on the altar. It came to him to create a group of floral jewelry whose design harks back to 18th Century models. These rose ear clips are the first in a series of jewelry with pink diamonds he designed for Ara Arslanian of Cora Diamonds and had made by the prestigious firm of Carvin French. Walling transposed the white diamonds from the 18th century floral spray to more brilliant pinks and set the leaves with olivines, breathing life into the flower. His attention to detail is evident in his selection of rose gold and green gold to complement the gemstones, heightening their color. To complete the design, he finished the stem with a pear-shaped olivine and, on the flower, lined the inside petal with pink diamonds. Walling solved the problem of long, dangling earrings which annoy some women by designing these ear clips with 50 percent of the earring on the ear. When created in this proportion, they do not elongate the face. Each ear clip is articulated so that it moves slightly when worn. And, by flipping a knob, the clip turns and the ear clip converts to a brooch clip, wearable on a shoulder or on the lapel of a fashionable jacket. These elegant ear clips, wearable during the day, are just as appropriate for the evening. These ear clips are illustrated in Penny Proddow and Marion Fasel, "Diamonds, A Century of Spectacular Jewels", New York, 1996, page 152; "Departures Magazine", May/June 1997 page 179; "Town & Country", May 1995, page 48; and in "The Nashville Banner", April 17, 1997, page D2.
