AN ELIZABETH I ENGRAVED GILT-BRASS STRIKING HORIZONTAL TABLE CLOCK
NICHOLAS VALLIN. CIRCA 1590-1600
AN ELIZABETH I ENGRAVED GILT-BRASS STRIKING HORIZONTAL TABLE CLOCK NICHOLAS VALLIN. CIRCA 1590-1600 CASE : stepped-moulded sides engraved with geometric bands above arcaded courtyard vistas, each central arch with different view, latched base panel with engraved border and signed 'VALLEN' (sic) within a scroll engraved cartouche DIAL : 3½ in. square gilt-brass dial plate, engraved fan spandrels to knurled later bezel, white metal champlevé chapter ring (formerly raised on pierced and engraved domed bell cover) with flowerhead half hour markers, engraved centre with 24-hour ring, later steel hand MOVEMENT : square plates with four square section baluster pillars, fusee with later chain for the time train (later barrel) and fixed steel barrel for the strike train, back plate with steel turn catches (one replaced), later plain balance cock for later brass balance to verge escapement, calibrated countwheel for strike on bell (lacking) See back cover illustration for detail 2¾ in.
