* An English Marquetry Tall Case Clock daniel quare london, 17th/18th century with possibly later case the molded cornice above the glazed door and sides enclosing the brass dial with Roman numeral hours and Arabic numeral minutes, signed Dan. Quare, London and flanked by barley twist columns, over the straight trunk fitted with a lenticle, the base terminating in flattened ball feet, inlaid throughout with foliate scroll and floral decoration. Height 84 1/2 inches. Estimate $ 4,000-6,000 Property from the Estate of Marilou von Ferstel, Chicago, Illinois Clock is in overall good, stable condition. The exterior of the case has a fairly even finish throughout with just light surface wear. Inlays appear mostly intact but with some splitting and minor areas of loss towards the base. The case does not show signs of wear consistent with the lifespan of maker Daniel Quare (1647/49-1724) suggesting that the case is possibly restored. The back panel is likely replaced. Works fit well into case, and the ears are not adapted, the dial lines up nicely with the hood. Feet replaced. The works appear complete with two weights (dented brass casings), a pendulum (likewise dents) a crank and a door key. The attachment between the pendulum and the movement is an obvious replacement. Clock runs, unsure of duration or accuracy of movement. Clock strikes on the hour. Clock also strikes on one bell and plays a tune on four other bells when the cord is pulled. The rosette to the upper left side of the face (strike/silent) raises a notched arm within the works but it is presently not connected to anything thus does not operate. The rosette to the right (numbered) is attached to the works and raises and lowers the pendulum. Additional images available upon request.
