AN EXCEPTIONAL SET OF FOUR AESTHETIC PERIOD ECCLESIASTICAL PAINTED AND LEADED GLASS WINDOW PANELS, circa 1863, attributed to Heaton, Butler & Bayne, each finely painted with Angels, one holding an open scroll bearing the words 'Liber Vitae' (Book of Life), one playing a harp, one holding a scythe and the other with clasped hands, each 70cm x 28.5cm, together with a pair of similar quatrefoil window panels inscribed 'Prayer and Praise' and 'Death and Life', both 46cm x 46cm, and a tall leaded window glazed with coloured diamond-shaped panes, 77cm x 24.5cm (7) FOOTNOTES: These window panels were all originally fitted in Christ Church, East Sheen, Mortlake. The church was designed by Arthur Blomfield and consecrated in 1863, and was originally glazed with Powell's rolled cathedral glass. The stained glass was designed by Clement Heaton, James Butler and Robert Bayne of Cardington Street, Hampstead Road, London. Stained glass achieved its greatest height under Heaton, Butler & Bayne, who often worked with architect Arthur Blomfield. In the early years, Heaton and Butler originally worked with Clayton & Bell, until Bayne joined the partnership in 1862. The firm continued to be run by their sons until 1953. A very similar window panel painted with an angel holding a scroll, dating to circa 1892, by Heaton, Butler & Bayne can be found in the South Aisle of All Saints Church in Orton, Cumbria.
