An extremely fine and historically important builder's unrigged full hull model of the C.S.S. 'Florida' built by Miller and Sons, Liverpool, 1861 the hull, finely planked in birch and pinned with bamboo tre'n'ls has bow, stern and quarter cabin decoration finely carved in boxwood with stylised dolphins, leaves, shields and scrolls, chain plates and channels with dead eyes,and rudder. Deck details include fruitwood mast stumps and funnels, safety valve extension pipes, capstan, helm, belaying pins, gun tackle rings, davits (one missing) , bollards, coal shute covers, catheads and bilge pump trunks, all of brass. The beach deck, with scored planks, has gratings of boxwood, deck lights, companionways and lockers with yew inlay and partially open doors where appropriate, bulwarks inlaid with yew panels, hammock and gun tool racks and mahogany waterways and much other fine detailing, the whole finished in 'copper' to the waterline and laquer above. The model is mounted on four baluster turned brass pedestals on a birdseye maple and mahogany plinth in the original mahogany framed glazed case with the original carved mahogany table. Hull dimensions -- 6 x 51in. (15.2 x 129.5cm.). Measurements overall -- 46 x 61in. (116.8 x 155cm.)
