AN EXTREMELY RARE LARGE PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT CARP-FORM TUREENS AND COVERS, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD, 1760-1780 each boldly modeled with the fish on its side, the molded scales decorated in puce enamel, the head and fins heightened with splashes of gilding, the cover similarly modeled and surmounted with a small fish-form knopporcelain18 3/8 in. (46.7 cm) long eachCondition ReportBoth tureens with enamels and gilding overall well preserved. One with losses to the first and second tips of the dorsal fin, and first tip of the bottom fin, as illustrated in the catalogue. Also with two frits to the mouth, with an associated small flake chip to one frit. The other with the first and second tips of the dorsal fin restored, and the bottom fin previously off and restored back, and with two frits to the corner of the mouth. There is a firing flaw on the inner rim edge from which extends a very fine firing haircrack approx 2 inches into the head. One cover with an area of restoration across 1/2 of the cover with associated overpaint, there is also a flake chip to the underside of the rim. As seen in the illustration, the fish form knop of the other cover with losses to the tail and small areas of restoration to the head of the fish and tip of dorsal fin. This cover also with a 3/8 inch retouched chip to the edge.
