AN HISTORIC SET OF IVORY CIGAR CADDIES, A GIFT TO EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN I FROM HIS BROTHER EMPEROR FRANZ JOSEF I OF AUSTRIA, CIRCA 1860 The unusual pair of ivory caddies formed in the shape of cups, each set with a high relief carved portraits of Emperor Maximilian I (opposite profiles), together with two vintage photographs of these caddies sitting atop a marble topped side-table 3¼ inches (8.3 cms.) tall According to some papers accompanying the Maximillain & Carlota material, these caddies were made from the tusks of a pet elephant that Franz Josef and Maximilian had while children. This elephant died and Franz Josef had these made as sentimental gifts for his brother, the Emperor of Mexico. Some loses to sections of ivory, but main bodies of the caddies are fine. (2)
