With an Abridged Account of the New Discoveries in the South Seas Author: Hunter, John Place Published: London Publisher: Printed for John Stockdale Date Published: 1793 Description: xxi, [1], 17-525, [1 ad.] pp. Illustrated with copper engraved frontispiece and title page, folding map, and folding engraving by William Blake. (8vo) 21x13 cm (8¼x5¼"), later half calf, raised bands, spine stamped in gilt with gilt-lettered morocco label, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Condensed and first octavo edition of John Hunter's account of the early days of English settlement in Australia. The engraving by William Blake, "A Family of New South Wales," is a fine and sympathetic portrayal of the Indigenous Australian family. Title page slightly trimmed, as expected due to the engraving being slightly larger than the rest of the book. ESTC N33298 or T112021. Condition: Binding lightly faded and worn, occasional dampstains and spotting to leaves, plates lightly foxed, still overall quite clean; near fine.
