AN IMPORTANT SIGNED AND DATED EASTERN KUFIC QUR'AN SECTION NEAR EAST, DATED AH432/1040-1AD Qur'an I:1-II:97 surat al-fatihah to surat al-baqara 92; LXIII:6-CXIV:7 surat al-munafiqun 6 to end of surat al-nas manuscript on fine buff paper, 30ff, 16ll. fine black Eastern kufic , gold rosette verse markers with green and orange highlights, gold medallions marking every tenth verse, containing the word 'ashr in kufic , every fifth verse marked by irregular palmette, sura headings in gold kufic outlined in black, last two pages of Qur'anic text with kufic sura headings reserved on panels of scrolling vegetal ornament in gold and copper outlined in blue, opening illumination with 7ll. gold kufic within thin blue border containing white plaited kufic inscription, inside frame of elaborate ornamental plaited kufic over gold and orange arabesque, the corners with blue medallions containing elaborate foliated kufic , the opening double-page of Qur'anic text with surat al-fatiha and part of surat al-baqara with elaborate bands of ornamental plaited kufic above and geometric panels below, each with large marginal palmettes, after the Qur'anic text a closing double-page illumination with prayer in 9ll. of gold kufic within red, blue and gold border containing vegetal and geometric interlace panels, insect and water damage affecting margins and the opening and closing illuminations but scarcely affecting text, old repairs Folio 15¼ x 12½in.
