AN INCENSE SET ( KODOGU ) IN LACQUER CASES edo period (early 19th century) An elaborate set for the incense ceremony in matching lacquer cases decorated with the Tokugawa hollyhock crest ( aoi-mon ) and another unidentified peony crest in gold and silver hiramaki-e on a ground of mura-nashiji , the interiors of the various containers nashiji ; the set consists of: a large double-tier storage box which contains the various pieces of the set with silver ring fittings cast with aoi-mon ; a writing box ( suzuribako ) decorated on the underside of the lid in gold hiramaki-e and gold foil with the 'Three Friends' on a mura-nashiji ground with togidashi bands of clouds, fitted with removable untensil trays, holding the inkstone, silver hexagonal mizuire cast with pine boughs and two brushes in gold lacquer cases; a large square of thick paper, gold on one side and silver on the other, onto which the pieces are laid; a rectangular board for cutting incense, scratched from use; a very small canted-square cutting board; two blue and white porcelain censers ( koro ) with wood lids stored in brocade bags woven with blue and gold-wrapped threads in peony scroll; two folded gold and silver-lined paper packets for incense in matching brocade covers; a small, square triple-tier box lined with metal which contains nine mica plates rimmed in silver, one empty rim and small pieces of incense; a silver untensil holder set on a splayed bracket foot cast with reticulated foliate scroll which contains a fan-shaped spatula, a pair of silver chopsticks, a silver paper prickeer and silver tweezers; a cutting knife with lacquer handle; a feather with lacquer handle; an incense spoon with lacquer handle; a rectangular box containing small rectangular wood tags lacquered in gold with plants on one side and numbers or a syllable on the other; two hexagonal boxes fitted with silver rectangular slots to receive the tags; a long, rectangular game piece with two recessed slots, one now covered, one apparently missing; four incense-burning game boards of graduated size applied with silver chrysanthemum-form stands for the mica plates; a double-tier square box containing stamps carved with emblems of fifty-two chapters of The Tale of Genji and a small album in ink and colors on silk of Genji designs for each chapter in a brocade cover matching the others in the set (15)
