An Interesting Family Archive of Letters and Other Written Documents Relating to J C Herries (1778-1855) - Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Master of the Royal Mint, President of the Board of Trade, and Secretary at War - and his three sons, Sir Charles John Herries, K.C.B., William Robert Herries Major, 43rd Light Infantry, (killed at the battle of Moodkee, December 1845), and Edward Herries, C.B., Secretary of the British Legation at Berne, several are of numismatic interest including: Copy of letter dated 16 January 1761 to "King (Geo:3d) submitting Designs for the several Species of Coins"; Copy of similar letter dated 4 September 1820 "to the King in Council submitting Designs for Half Crown Piece"; Notes regarding "Steps taken by the Master of the Mint on the accession of George the Fourth to the Crown on the 29th Jany. 1820"; Note from the Mint Office dated 24 February 1824, being "An Account of the quantity of Gold & Silver Monies coined at His Majesty's Mint in each Year since the peace..."; and a "Draft of the Final Account of the Right Hon. J.C.Herries as Master and Warden of the Mint from the 5th Jany. to 14th Decemr. 1830"; together with two letters from B Pistrucci, one dated 22 August 1820 concerning his studio at The Mint, the other dated 16 October 1830 soliciting the commission to produce the Official Coronation Medals, and two from William Wyon dated 11 August and 3 September 1828 both concerning the design of a proposed 'Union Crown' (87)
