An interesting Great War D.S.O. group awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel B.G. Baker, Commanding 13th Yorkshire Regiment in France, late 21st Hussars and 9th Prussian Hussars DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER, G.V.R.; QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen, S.A. 1901 (Capt., Imp. Yeo.) re-engraved but see note below; 1914 MONS STAR (Capt.); BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS, M.I.D. (Lt. Col.); DEFENCE MEDAL; France CROIX DE GUERRE 1914-1917, with bronze palm; Czechoslovakia WAR CROSS 1914-18; Serbia ORDER OF THE WHITE EAGLE, 3rd class neck badge with swords, in its Arthur Bertrand case of issue; Prussia JUBILEE MEDAL 1897, all but the last two mounted court style on a contemporary wearing bar, nearly extremely fine (10) Footnote The group is sold with a quantity of original documentation including M.I.D. Certificates dated 9th April, 1917 and 7th April, 1918, award certificate for Prussian Medal, two photographs, various telegrams and correspondence including an Invoice from Spink & Son, dated 1923, for supplying a replacement Q.S.A. Bernard Granville Baker was born in Poona, 23rd October, 1870, and educated at Winchester and the Military College, Dresden. He served with the 21st Hussars (India, detached to Q.M.G. Branch, Upper Burma) 1890-94. Unable to obtain a regular commission he wrote to the German Emperor for a commission in the Prussian Cavalry, receiving an appointment in the 9th Prussian Hussars with whom he served until the outbreak of the Boer War. He served in South Africa with the East Kent Imperial Yeomanry. In 1914 he joined the Indian Corps Staff at Marseilles, serving with the Intelligence branch, and later with 1st Army staff.In 1915 he was appointed 2nd in command 20th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, and in the following year Lieutenant Colonel, commanding 13th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Baker was Commissioner for Propaganda in Enemy Countries, Italian and Salonika fronts, in 1918, and was a member of the Supreme Economic Councils' Mission to Central Europe in 1919. He was awarded the D.S.O. for distinguished service in connection with Military Operations in France and Flanders, London Gazette 3rd June, 1918. After his retirement in December, 1919 he spent much time in travel and writing books. He was a Fellow of both the Royal Geographical and Royal Historical Societies. Lt. Colonel Baker died on 12th March, 1957.
