AN ITALIAN CINQUEDEA OF THE HISTORISMUS PERIOD with triangular double-edged blade, each face with two wide fullers and etched and gilt for most of its length with foliated scrollwork, a trophy of arms, a sun in slendour and two trumpet-playing putti framing the crowned French royal arms within the collar of the Order of St. Michel, and inscribed 'Nec Pluibus Impar' at the top, the hilt of gilt copper-alloy, partly cast, chased and with strips of running foliage and a scale pattern, the arched quillons and grip set with flat shaped pieces of lapis lazuli and agate (two missing from the quillons), with, in the centre of each face of the quillons, the arms as on the blade executed in lapis lazuli, silver and gilt-metal, and pommel cast and chased as two dolphins framing a lapis lazuli three dimensional bust of a crowned man wearing the collar of an order, in original wooden scabbard covered in red velvet (worn), the gilt-copper locket, chape and edging bands etched with running foliage, on the locket framing crowned cartouches, flanked by dolphins and inscribed 'L XIII', second quarter of the 19th Century 26in.
