Beschreibung:

An Italian terrestrial globe, 19th century, 117cm high, 96cm wide, 96cm deep overall This globe would appear to belong to a group of hand-drawn copies fashioned after Willem Jansz Blaeu which were produced in Venice at some point during the 19th century. The combination of large size and the fact that the annotations are hand drawn rather than printed would clearly indicate this date. A related example is illustrated in Peter van der Krogt 'Globi Neerlandi' pages 522-23 and a pair reside in the Portuguese Embassy to the Vatican. Please note: Following further research the catalogue description should read as above and not as printed in the catalogue. Condition Report: The condition report for this lot has not yet been completed. Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. old chips and splits. Some additional areas of scratching and indentation. Wear and fading overall. Some old repairs. Some cracks to the globe (see images). The surface of the globe is worn to an extent whereby most of detail of the globe is worn or faded away and not 'legible' (see images). Only elements to the lower half of the globe are worn and faded but partly visible/ legible. There are some sections of loss from the surface of the globe and some areas where various filler has been crudely used to disguise loss. Surface wear and surface corrosion to metal elements. Where there appears to have been paint and / or gilding only minor evidence of this remains. The globe does not revolve in position easily and would require adjustment/ restoration in order to do so. The frame of the stand is of solid structure with only very minor movement to some joints. There are old splits and cracks to sections of the stand and areas of old worm damage throughout. Some has been disguised by filler. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition Condition Report Disclaimer
