An ormolu mounted patinated bronze mantel clock Wilson & Gandar, London, second quarter of the 19th century The four pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement and 3.75 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial signed Wilson & Gandar, Southampton Street, STRAND to centre and with steel moon hands within canted silvered brass surround and hinged bevel glazed bezel, in a case with gilt moulded rectangular tablet upstand above shallow cavetto cornice over generous applied gilt foliate scroll infill around dial and conforming lion mask centred apron mount, flanked by gilt architectural quoin decoration to angles and with elaborate scroll cast arched sound frets to sides, the rear with rectangular door incorporating patinated bronze fretwork insert, on gilt moulded stepped skirt base with further lion's mask and scroll cast mounts to front and sides and foliate chased knurl feet, 27.5cm (10.75ins) high. The partnership of Wilson and Gandar appears not to be recorded in the usual sources, however the retail signature for Wilson and Gandar, 392 Strand, appears on numerous clocks dating to the latter half of the 19th century. Stylistically the current lot can be dated to around 1830-40 which would suggest that the firm initially worked from Southampton Street before moving to a more prestigious address on the Strand. Pendulums, weights, winding and case keys: unless specifically indicated otherwise in the catalogue description it can be assumed that all clocks with cases are sold with the requisite pendulum and correct number of weights (where appropriate), however we cannot guarantee that they are original to the clock. We do not indicate in the catalogue description whether winding or case keys are present with any specific clock. As many clocks are consigned without keys please check with the department to establish whether they are present or not prior to bidding. Condition: due to the mechanical nature of clocks and the fact that most are of great age we cannot offer any guarantee as to whether they are in working order or free from major faults or restoration.
