AN OSAKA TAMBA KO-WAKIZASHI EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1690), SIGNED TAMBA (NO) KAMI YOSHIMICHI (YOSHIMICHI III) Configuration ( sugata ): of strongly curved, flat, wedge section ( ohira-zukuri ) with shallow peaked back ( iori-mune ); length ( nagasa ): 1 shaku , 1 sun , 3 bu (34.2cm.); curvature ( sori ): strong, of 0.8cm. Forging pattern ( jihada ): rough wood grain ( o-itame ). Tempering pattern ( hamon ): large, rolling patterns ( notare ) becoming more subdued approaching the hamachi ; on the inside the notare becomes narrower and more subdued whilst on the outside it retains its width, but smooths down; all executed in bright nie splitting into two widely diverging lines of tempering ( nijuba ) in the monouchi , the upper inside tempering pattern meandering into a low froth resembling blankets of fog. Point ( boshi ): midare-komi with small end ( ko-maru ) and long kaeri . Tang ( nakago ). Shape ( keitai ): disproportionately long, slender and with a dry, brown patina; file marks ( yasurime ): strongly sloping ( o-sujikai ); end ( nakagojiri ): iri-yamagata ; holes ( mekugi-ana ): one; signature ( katanamei ): Tamba (no) Kami Yoshimichi. Shirasaya . Ko-wakizashi-koshirae comprising: a russet stone surface saya set with an iron kojiri green-wrapped tsuka fitted with gilt and shakudo katabori menuki in the form of shishi with gold inlay in Kaga style and a pair of iron fuchi-kashira , unsigned; shibuichi mokko hamadashi tsuba incised with rain lines, unsigned--length of koshirae 49.6cm.; length of tsuka 11.9cm.; diameter of tsuba 5.6cm. Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate, no. 379083, Showa 54 (1979); and a koshu tokubetsu kicho token certificate, no. 19329, Showa 54 (1979), issued by the N.B.T.H.K.; a futsu kicho koshirae certificate, no. 54, Showa 54 (1979), issued by the N.B.T.H.K.
