An outstanding Collection of Roman and Italian bronze aes grave coinage, 3rd century BC, consisting of a broad variety of types and denominations, including several scarce or rare items. The Collection consists of 45 aes grave coins, the majority being issues from Rome. Among the early issues from the Roman mint is a Sextans, shell, rev. caduceus (TV 5), 5 Uniciae and Semuniciae with a knucklebone as obverse type (TV 6-7 and vars.), a handsome Quadrans depicting a running boar on both sides (TV 11). From the period dating to the middle of the third century are an As, helmeted head of Roma on both sides (TV 23), and a similar As with the head of Apollo (TV 46), 2 Semisses with a helmeted head of Roma on both sides (TV 17, 24), three Quadrantes with open hand types (TV 19, 39, 2 Sextantes with shell or tortoise types (TV 27, 35), issues from the third quarter of the 3rd century BC include 2 Semises, head of Saturn left, rev., prow right (TV 52), 2 Trienses, helmeted head of Mars right, rev., prow right (TV 53), 2 Quadrantes, head of Hercules with lion skin left, rev., prow right (TV 54), 4 Sextantes, head of Mercury left, rev., prow right (TV 55) and 2 Unciae (TV 56). The late 3rd century BC issues are also represented with 2 Janus Head Asses (TV 70), and 3 Semises. Another rich part of the Collection are the issues of Tuder, Umbria which have among them a nearly complete run as catalogued by Thurlow-Vecchi, including two Asses, sleeping dog, legend above, rev. lyre (TV 158) and a Semis with the same types (TV 164), three Trientes, including a rare type (eagle, rev., cornucopiae) illustrated only by a old line drawing in Thurlow-Vecchi (TV 165, 165a), a Sextans depicting a cicada (TV 161), an attractive Quadrans with a frog (TV 166), and another Sextans (TV 167). Other Umbrian issues found in the Collection are a Sextans and a Triens of Iguvium, ca. 220 BC (TV 148, 152), and 5 almond-shaped aes grave (TV 181var.) as well as a Quincunx of Hatria, head of Apollo left, rev. Kantharos, legend to the right (TV 183), an Uncia from Etruria, facing head of Augur, rev. , sacrificial instruments (TV 137) and a Semis from an uncertain Central Italian mint featuring a pair of wrestlers (TV 245). Condition overall is very fine for these cast issues, the majority with an attractive green patinas, a seldom available opportunity to aquire a superb collection of these early Italian coins (45) (lot)
