Anglo-Chinese School and Japanese School, circa 1820 An Album of Studies of Flowers, Plants and Fruitincluding: Azalea indica ; Mirabilis Jalapa ; Hibiscus Rosa sinensis (Chinese Hibiscus) Gomphrena globosa (Globe amaranthus); Paonia Moutan Banksia (Paeony); Canna indica (Indian Shot); Lilium tigrinum (Tiger Lily) illustrated ( a ); Chrysanthemum sinensis ; Amaryllis regina ; Magnolia denudata ; Hosta rovata ; Calycanthus pracox ; Lilium congiflorum ; Gardenia florida ; Alpinia nutans illustrated ( b ); Rosa indica ; and Polianthus tuberosa the majority with contemporary inscription in Latin, some with English descriptions (lower centre); 15 with inscription in Chinese characters and translations of the Chinese in English watercolour, heightened with white and gum arabic, some on tracing paper, watermark'J WHATMAN (13), 'J WHATMAN 1805' (24), 'J WHATMAN 1826' (4), '1794' (2), 'JW 1794' (3), 'M&J LAY 1817' (1), the binding half crushed morocco, marbled-paper-covered boards, and gilt-tooled spine the watercolours 18¼ x 14½ in.
