Anonymous. Comic Map of Europe, Subtitled: England enraged forgets Ireland but still keeps it in her power..., circa 1870, lithograph with contemporary hand colouring, old folds strengthened on verso, one repaired closed tear, slight creasing, old postage marks to verso with slight showthrough, 275 x 390 mm Caricature map of Europe at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War. France is shown trying to overthrow Prussia. Prussia kneels on a prostrate Austria and has a proprietorial hand on Holland. Turkey ignores it all and reclines and smokes. Russia is depicted as a begger anxious to pick up anything that will fill his basket. Uncommon. The map had been folded for posting and has a postage frank showing it was posted in Burnopfield in Co. Durham to an address in Plymouth. It retains the half penny red stamp which paid for the postage. (1)
