ANONYMOUS - Manuscript treatise on the practice and use of the compass rose and the portolan . [France: c.1650] Manuscript treatise of 8 leaves, first and last leaves recto and verso blank, 220 x 150mm. The 6 leaves illustrated with 8 forms of decorated compass roses, in red, blue, and green, heightened in gold, each with an integral description in French describing the use and form of the compass rose, one bifolio with an attractive Western European chart, with inset compass rose and revolving volvelle, table to locate the new moon, unfinished rhumb-line diagram without its accompanying text, stitched, later wrappers (final leaf detached, corner singed). An unusual French treatise, lavishly decorated, but unfinished on the final leaf. This delightful discussion of compass roses, their use and adaption as tables and mathematical devices, has been decorated for presentation. The table for the new moons covers the period 1650-1669.
