Anthony Buckley (1912-1993) Royal photographer, album collection of twenty six black and white photographs from his first commission for HM The Queen and Prince Phillip taken in 1960 and to be sold in aid of Cancer Research. UK Royal photographer The lot comprises a personal collection of 26 official photographs of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip as they prepared for a Royal tour of India and Pakistan in 1961. Retained by Royal Photographer Anthony Buckley (1912-93) from his first sitting with the Royal couple, the unique album was later passed to Buckley Taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace on October 19, 1960, a label on one of the photographs explains their purpose. Titled For First publication in Morning Newspapers of Monday, 16 The formal 10 x 8 inch black and white portraits show the 34-year-old monarch and her consort, then aged 39, separately and together, with Prince Philip in full dress naval uniform as Admiral of the Fleet, and both adorned with the Order of the Garter, the Queen also wearing memorial brooches for her father, King George VI, and grandfather, King George V. Because they knew they would be going into the finest places during the tour, the brief was to show as much of the grand setting of Buckingham Palace as possible, The album is a one-off. There The seven-week tour, which also included Nepal and Iran, was the first time Her Majesty had visited the former colonies, which had by then gained independence as members of the Commonwealth. Buckley had initially gained a reputation for his portraits of leading actors and actresses of the day when he first opened his studio in 1937. A retrospective show dedicated to his work at the National Portrait Gallery in 2002 included portraits from the 1930s to In the 1950s, he worked with Dorothy Wilding who took the original photo of the Queen which was used for postage stamps from 1952 to 1967. Having established the firm of Anthony Buckley in 1952 (later Anthony Buckley & Constantine), in the 1960s he moved to Grosvenor Street as a well-established royal photographer. He first met Buckley on assignment at Buckingham Palace. Last year nine portrait photographs by Buckley of the Queen, dating to 1963 and taken for use on Canadian banknotes, took £13,000 at auction. Described at the time as Alan Shawcross has also been commissioned to take royal portraits by The Royal Mint for use on coins. This included those of the Queen Mother used as reference for a 100th birthday coin. He has also photographed HM the Queen, Prince Charles, the Duke of Edinburgh, the King of Bahrain, the President of Egypt, the Ruler of Dubai and the Princely Family of Liechtenstein.
