ANTONIUS RAMPEGOLUS (c.1360-1423), Aurea Biblia , in Latin Decorated manuscript on paper, 210 x 150 mm., 216 leaves (plus 4 blank paper leaves and two endleaves from decorated manuscripts on vellum): 1-21 1 0, 22 1 0(vii-x blank), vellum sewing guards at the centre of each gathering, 25 lines written in brown ink in a cursive bookhand in 2 columns, initials touched red, underlining in red, rubrics and initials in red, large opening initial in red decorated in brown ink and yellow wash. Written by Frater Jacobus Bure[n]man from the Premonstratensian monastery at Schussenried in the diocese of Constance (suppressed 1803), colophon dated 1472. Contemporary German blind-stamped vellum over wooden boards, the panelled covers densely filled with tools including the symbols of the Four Evangelists in roundels, pelicans, stags, hunting dogs, acorns, 'Maria' bands, flowers, foliate scrolls, the upper cover with central lozenge containing a lion rampant, lower cover with chain-hole (lacking clasp and catch). Antonius Rampegolus was born in Siena and became a friar at Genoa; his Aurea Biblia comprises an exegetical handbook, arranged in alphabetical order, and served as an aid to preachers. Cf.
