[Apollo 15] James Irwin saluting the American flag at Hadley Base, EVA 3. David Scott, 26 July – 7 August 1971. Printed 1971. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS15–88-11866]. 20.3×25.4 cm (8×10 in), with “A Kodak Paper” watermark on the verso, numbered “NASA AS15–88-11866” in red in top margin (NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas). Literature: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, February 1972, ppg. 236–237; TIME, 23 August 1971, pg. 26; A Man on the Moon: Lunar Explorers, Chaikin, ppg. 64–65; Apollo: The Epic Journey to the Moon, Reynolds, ppg. 186–187. Few Apollo photographs have been reproduced more often than this remarkable photo of Irwin, the US flag, the Rover, the LM Falcon and Mount Hadley Delta in the background, taken at the beginning of EVA 3 as James Irwin and David Scott both took “tourist” photographs with the flag in the splendid moonscape of Hadley landing site. Hadley Delta rises approximately 3,600 m above the plain; the base of the mountain is 5 km away. “I felt like I was an alien as I traveled through space. When I got on the Moon, I felt at home. We had mountains on three sides and had the deep canyon to the west, a beautiful spot to camp. I felt in a way Adam and Eve must have felt, as they were standing on the Earth and they realized that they were all alone. I talk about the Moon as a very holy place.” James Irwin (Kelley, plate 46). Condition A diagonal 3 cm scratch / indentation in the right margin well outside of image, otherwise glossy print in excellent condition with vibrant color.
