[Apollo 17] The last manned spacecraft returning from the lunar surface: LM Challenger with Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan visible in the window. Ronald Evans, 7–19 December 1972, EVA 3. Printed 1972–1973. Vintage chromogenic print on resin coated Kodak paper [NASA image AS17–149-22857]. 25.4×20.3 cm (10×8 in), with NASA caption numbered “72-H-1636”, “72-HC-981” and “G-73–5365”, as well as “A Kodak Paper” watermarks on the verso (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland). Literature: Voices from the Moon: Apollo Astronauts Describe Their Lunar Experiences, Chaikin, p. 117. This superb photograph of the last manned spacecraft returning from the lunar surface shows Eugene Cernan’s (his bubble helmet well-defined) looking at the CSM America from the LM Challenger’s right window (see mission transcript). This picture, taken from the Command Module America, shows Challenger’s ascent stage in lunar orbit. Small reaction control thrusters are at the sides of the moonship with the bell of the ascent rocket engine itself underneath. The hatch allowing access to the lunar surface is visible in the front and a round radar antenna appears at the top. (https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_821.html). The Lunar Module descent stage was used as a launch platform and remains on the Moon. From the mission transcript when the photograph was taken: 189:55:15 Cernan: It is unbelievable. This (the LM) is the greatest flying in the world, Ron. 189:55:18 Evans (laughter) 189:55:18 Cernan: Can you see me? 189:55:19 Evans: Yes, I can see you. Right in there.
