a large lot of about 70 items relating to the Carter and Butler families of Beaver and Washington Counties, PA, and environs, most from first half of 20th century. Lot includes 6th plate tintype of African-American woman and young girl, identified as "Minister Carter's wife." Tintype is in a full case, but shows heavy solarization. According to family history, Mr. Carter bought his wife and some of her relatives out of slavery. Also included is a cdv identified as Harriet Elizabeth Carter Butler, the connection to the Butler family. Other Carter family items include a cdv of John Nelson Carter, along with a coupon and business card, identifying him as a barber in Steelton, PA. There is also ephemera for Dr. Wm Beverly Carter, MD, of Philadelphia, including an envelope addressed to Mrs. Hattie Butler. Lot includes about 40 letters, most addressed to William F. ("Bill") Butler from his Aunt and Father. The letters from the father are on "William N. Butler, Attorney at Law" letterhead. Bill was born in 1903 and graduated from Geneva College, then attended Howard Law School. Most of the letters are dated 1931, with a few from 1930 and 1932. Bill never practiced law, since he could find no one to hire him because of his race, but was employed in related fields, including serving 12 years on Pennsylvania's Board of Probation and Parole. The letters from his Dad are particularly poignant, referring to the many thousands unemployed and starving at the beginning of winter, as well as his own lack of income in the tough economic times at the beginning of the Depression, and in one letter cautions his son not to quit his job until he has another. Lot also includes AME Church ephemera such as pamphlets from conventions and the Sunday School Institute, tickets to church plays and 2 sashes in red, green, white, yellow and blue silk, one with matching rosettes. Although there is no ephemera related to him, another family member, Joseph Hillary Butler (1812-1864) was a private in Co. E of the 32nd Regmt. USCT, and killed at Beauford, SC on 2/23/64. Overall an interesting lot worthy of further research. Condition:Older paper items show some toning, but overall lot is in very good condition.
