ARETAEUS of Cappadocia. De acutorum, ac diuturnorum morborum causis & signis, Lib. IIII , in Greek. - De acutorum, ac diuturnorum morborum curatione, Lib. IIII , in Greek. Paris: Adrien Turnèbe, 1554. 8 o (163 x 105 mm). 102 leaves. Greek and roman types. Woodcut ornamental initials, initial spaces with printed guide letters. (A few minor foxmarks.) Eighteenth-century tree calf, smooth spine gilt (joints and corners rubbed). Provenance : contemporary inscriptions on title dated 1555 (somewhat cropped). EDITIO PRINCEPS of Aretaeus' work on the causes, symptoms and cures of acute and chronic diseases. The Pneumatic school of medicine, from which Aretaeus' treatises are the only works that survive intact, revived the doctrine of Hippocrates and reintroduced the use of the Ionic dialect into medical literature. Aretaeus also employed Homeric words and expressions, and is a significant witness to Greek prose style during the first century A.D. Included is the "first accurate account of diabetes, to which Arataeus gave its present name" (Garrison-Morton 22). Adams A-1549; NLM/Durling 255; Norman 63; Osler 327; Waller 455; Wellcome I:393.
