Venice: Aldo Manuzio, 1 June 1497
A large crisp copy in a near-contemporary alla greca binding made in Bologna. This is the fourth volume of Aldo's magnificent edition of the works of Aristotle to be printed, containing Aristotle's Problemata and Mechanics, Theophrastus on plants, Alexander of Aphrodisias's Problemata, and the Problemata of Theophrastus.
The workshop to which this binding has been attributed, the Second Binder of Achille Bocchi, was active from around 1508 to 1539. It was named for the Bolognese humanist Bocchi (1488-1562) who wrote a series of chronicles of the city, the dedication copies of which he had elaborately bound. His first binder was active until 1522, then he transferred his commissions to a new workshop. Hobson and Quaquarelli opine that this binder was also a bookseller (A. Hobson and L. Quaquarelli, Legature bolognesi del Rinascimento (1998), p.14, and for bindings with the same stamps, see plates 7 and 9).
Super-Chancery folio (318 x 210 mm). Greek type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: [*]1 aaaααα–iiiιιι κκκ lllλλλ–zzzψψψ &&&ωωω AAA–CCCΓΓΓ8 DDDΔΔΔ10 AAAaaa–MMMmmm8 NNNnnn ΞΞΞooo10 αa–δd8 εe10 aα6 bβ8 AAAααα–OOOξξξ8 PPPοοο10: 519 leaves. Some early annotations.
binding: Bolognese alla greca binding (316 x 215 mm), by the Second Binder of Achille Bocchi, ca. 1520, blind-tooled brown morocco with two concentric leafy borders, central arabesque stamp with small boar's head stamps, flat spine with extended headbands, later paper spine label, board edges grooved and flush with textblock, pins from four pairs of clasps, a few deckle edges. (Front joint cracked and weak, extremities slightly rubbed, a few wormholes in binding, spine slightly defective, lacking all straps.)
