40], 120, 129-192, 209-256, 241-256, 241-256, 273-511 pp. (8vo) 19.23x11.5 cm (7½x4½"), period paneled calf, raised spine bands, morocco lettering piece. First Edition in English. Very Rare First Edition in English of Aristotle’s Poetics, the earliest surviving work on dramatic theory and the first extant philosophical treatise to focus on literary theory in the West. Originally comprised of two books, the second book on Comedy was lost by the Middle Ages, and the rediscovery of its text was the basis for Umberto Eco’s best-selling novel The Romance of the Rose. Despite the erratic pagination, the text is contiguous and complete. Early bookplate and signature on flyleaf.
