Armed with a pistol (Smith & Wesson Model 1, 2nd issue) and sword. Housed in a leather push-button case. Sylvester is recorded as being a resident of Waterford, ME. He enlisted as a Corporal in the 7th Maine Infantry in late August 1861, probably when he posed for this image. He died less than two months later, 14 October 1861, although the cause of death is not listed in the database. The 7th ME left Augusta on Aug. 23 and arrived in Baltimore two days later. It remained in Baltimore until the 25th of October. This makes the most likely cause of death disease, which ravaged the Maine boys. By the end of the year, Co. F had to be disbanded because of loss of men, and a new company raised in its place. Condition: Worn area on front where something removed the outer layer of leather. Slightly dark image. Otherwise, very good.
