El Baz, Egyptian-born space scientist and principal geologist, worked on the Apollo program. He was responsible for selecting landing sites for the moon missions and training astronauts in lunar observations and photography. A year after he published this book, he became Science Advisor to Egyptian President Sadat. This was a report of experiments stemming from valuable observations and photographs of the earth taken on Gemini, Apollo and Skylab flights. The American astronauts on the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz US-Soviet international space mission were tasked with using their “special capabilities as trained observers” to visually study and photograph various features of the Earth’s surface.
